Start Date: ASAP About the Position Director, Lab Operations The
Director, Lab Operations (Microbiology) provides strategic and
operational leadership for a high volume clinical microbiology
laboratory, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant diagnostic
testing in a complex, multi site environment. Role overview Full
time, onsite leadership role, Monday Friday, overseeing a large,
high complexity clinical laboratory operation. Responsible for
daily operations, quality, staffing, and continuous improvement for
microbiology and associated testing platforms in a high throughput
lab processing up to tens of millions of tests annually. Reports to
the Vice President of Lab Operations and collaborates closely with
medical directors, technical leaders, and cross functional
partners. Key responsibilities Lead and develop large,
multidisciplinary teams (200 total staff across clinical and non
clinical functions) through frontline leaders and technical
supervisors. Oversee microbiology lab operations to ensure test
accuracy, turnaround time, and service levels for a high volume
core lab environment. Ensure full compliance with CAP, CLIA, state,
and federal regulations, including inspection readiness,
documentation, and corrective actions. Drive technical and platform
transitions (new analyzers, automation, LIS changes, or multi site
integrations), including validation, implementation, and change
management. Develop and implement quality assurance and quality
control programs, monitor performance metrics, and lead continuous
improvement initiatives. Build leadership bench strength by
mentoring supervisors and managers, setting clear goals, and
conducting regular performance reviews and development planning.
Partner with medical and business leadership to align lab
operations with organizational strategy, growth initiatives, and
new program or product rollouts. Model and champion an inclusive,
collaborative culture that promotes engagement, psychological
safety, and a strong sense of belonging. Required qualifications
Bachelor s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory
science, microbiology, or related life science. Medical
technologist registry required (ASCP, AMT, AAB, NCA, or
equivalent). Florida Supervisor License in Microbiology or as a
Generalist, or eligibility and willingness to obtain licensure
within required timelines if relocating. At least 10 years of
recent, hands on experience in clinical microbiology, including
work in a high complexity lab environment. Significant leadership
experience directing operations in a high volume clinical
laboratory, preferably 8 years in lab director or equivalent senior
roles. Demonstrated success leading large teams, including
frontline and mid level leaders, in a fast paced, high throughput
setting. Proven experience managing technical or platform
transitions (automation, instrumentation, or multi site
standardization). Strong track record of building and developing
leaders, improving team capability, and driving accountability.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability
to influence across disciplines and build trust with diverse
stakeholders. Preferred qualifications Master s degree in a
relevant scientific or management field (e.g., microbiology,
clinical laboratory science, healthcare administration, MBA).
Experience implementing new clinical programs, assays, or products
in a large laboratory network. Prior multi site leadership
experience within a national or regional reference lab or health
